After years of scholarship applications and paying for college out of pocket, Adejuwon Balogun said he was close to wondering whether the effort was worth it.
The Fayetteville State University graduate said repeated scholarship denials tested his resolve while he pursued a bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in cybersecurity. Still, he kept applying.
That persistence eventually led to his first scholarship through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), a renewable award supported by Vanguard that he said transformed both his college experience and outlook.
"It was the first scholarship I had ever received," Balogun said. "When I found out it was renewable, I broke down in tears."
The scholarship was more than financial support. Through TMCF, Balogun also participated in Leadership Institute, where he met students and professionals from around the country. He said connecting with other first-generation college students and immigrants reinforced that he wasn't alone in navigating unfamiliar territory.
Balogun's determination was shaped by his own journey. After moving from Lagos, Nigeria, to the United States as a teenager, he viewed education as an opportunity to build a different future while honoring the sacrifices his parents made for their family.
"When I came to the U.S., I wanted a fresh start," he said.
Even after being accepted to every college where he applied, paying for school remained one of his biggest obstacles. He covered his first two semesters himself and continued searching for scholarships while working with university staff to identify funding opportunities. Although Fayetteville State University provided assistance for one semester, he continued looking for longer-term support.
Now preparing to enter the workforce, Balogun hopes students facing similar challenges don't become discouraged by rejection.
"There were times I wanted to give up after being denied scholarships," he said. "But if you keep working hard and stay consistent, it will pay off."
