A two-year-old boy was mauled to death by two rottweilers at an alleged unlicensed day care in Georgia, per PEOPLE.

On Saturday (October 4), the Valdosta Police Department said emergency responders were called around 3:45 p.m. to a home on the 3800 block of Pecan Drive in Valdosta, Georgia, where they found Kaimir Jones, 3, dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Stacy Wheeler Cobb, 48, was operating a day care out of her home without a license. Cobb reportedly told police that she had taken a nap for two hours and believed the child was safe. During that time, police said Jones accessed the backyard and opened a kennel containing the dogs that fatally attacked him.

“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred, but because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child,” Police Chief Leslie Manahan said. “No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to them during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Cobb was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. Police said more charges may follow. Animal control officers seized the two Rottweilers and a third dog from the property.

Jones’ mother said she left work early that day due to "intuition." When she arrived, police were already at the scene.

“This was a heartbreaking, devastating, and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” she wrote on GoFundMe, where she is raising money for funeral expenses.

An investigation remains ongoing.
