A North Carolina mother is facing charges for allegedly opening fire at a back-to-school event after her son got into an argument with another boy.
On Saturday (August 9), Cherez Davis, 34, was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and “going armed to the terror of people" in connection with the incident at the Back-to-School Health Fair at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center, per PEOPLE.
Over 100 people, including children, attended the event, which offered discounted physicals, immunizations, and free school supplies for students.
According to the affidavit, Davis told police that her son got into an argument with another boy before an adult allegedly intervened, escalating the situation. Davis said she then retrieved a Taurus G6 handgun from her backpack and fired two rounds into the air in an attempt to defuse the situation.
The gunfire sparked chaos at the event as children and adults attempted to flee the area. Davis reportedly put the gun back in her backpack and began to walk away before she was located and arrested by police. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Davis was released from custody on a $50,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on December 9.
