An Indianapolis waitress has reportedly been fired after allegedly telling a Black couple that they were required to tip to dine at a Thai restaurant.
Now-viral video shows the incident unfold at Thaitanium, a restaurant in downtown Indianapolis.
“Told upon arrival that we cannot dine in unless we tip,” the caption in the video states. “Who said we would not? Others were not told the same.”
In the video, the waitress appeared to walk away from the Black couple to serve a white family after allegedly telling them they couldn't be seated until they agreed to tip.
A Black man questioned the white family to see if the waitress made the demand to their party.
“Excuse me, did she tell y’all the same thing she told us? That y’all can’t sit there unless you tip?” he asked. “Did she tell y’all that?”
The white couple and waitress appeared to look at the Black family without responding. In the video, the waitress seemingly leaned over to explain the situation to the white customers, but their conversation couldn't be heard.
In a follow-up post, the couple said the server was fired following the incident.
“My wife spoke with the owner of Thaitanium … and the server has been fired. We will be meeting with the owner tomorrow,” the video post stated.
The restaurant owner reportedly apologized to the couple and gave them a small bouquet of flowers.
“I am so shocked and so sorry for what happened,” the owner told the couple.
“There is no room for discrimination and prejudice in our restaurant,” the restaurant owner captioned a video. “I fired the waitress instantly after I found out what happened. This type of treatment to any of our customers is unacceptable. I am so sorry what happened and please accept my apologies.”
