The human remains of a missing 5-year-old girl have been allegedly discovered in a Colorado apartment belonging to her mother, who previously claimed she gave her daughter up for adoption, People reports.

Officers were initially called to the home of Alexus Tanielle Nelson, 27, after her mother told police that she was concerned about the safety of her grandchild, five-year-old Maha Li Hobbs. Nelson told police that she gave Maha up for adoption, but didn't provide proof of documentation.

Police were unable to verify Nelson's claim and arrested her on charges of attempting to influence a public servant.

Charges of child abuse resulting in death, tampering with a deceased human body, and tampering with physical evidence were added on Thursday (June 1) after the girl's remains were allegedly found in a closet at Nelson's home in Aurora, Colorado.

Police are still awaiting positive identification of the remains by the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office, but the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has identified the victim as Nelson's daughter.

"We are very confident that this is our victim," Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo said during a press conference on Thursday. “There’s a high probability that murder charges will end up being filed."

Nelson is currently in custody on a $100,000 bond.
