Mark Adams, the head coach of the Texas Tech men's basketball program, has been suspended after making a "racially insensitive" comment in which he invoked "slaves serving their masters" to a player.
Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he initially found out about the incident on Friday (March 3) and issued a written reprimand before moving to suspend Adams amid an internal investigation, per NBC News.
According to the university's news release, Adams made the "inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment” to a player during a meeting.
“Adams was encouraging the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters,” per the news release. “Adams immediately addressed this with the team and apologized.”
The school didn't disclose who would replace Adams for the upcoming Big 12 Tournament. Tech, who holds a 16-15 overall record, is set to play against West Virginia on Wednesday (March 8) in the conference tournament.
Adams is in his second season as Tech's head basketball coach. He succeeded Chris Beard, who left to coach at Texas but was fired by the Longhorns after he was charged in a felony domestic violence case.
