A New Jersey councilwoman was killed in what appears to be a targeted shooting outside of her home.
According to ABC News, 30-year-old Eunice Dwumfour, a Republican member of the Sayreville Borough Council, was found with gunshot wounds inside her car on Wednesday (February 1) night. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dwumfour appeared to be the "target of gunfire" at the townhouse complex that she lived in.
Police are still searching for a suspect.
On Thursday (February 2), Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick issued a statement, saying the community was "shocked and saddened by the loss of Eunice Dwumfour."
"Eunice was a dedicated member of our borough council who was truly committed to serve our residents," Kilpatrick said. "The fact she was taken from us by this despicable criminal act makes this incident all the more horrifying."
Mahesh Chitnis, a member of Sayreville's Human Relations Commission, said Dwumfour was "killed 300 feet from my home this evening."
"She was shot while returning back home," Chitnis wrote on Facebook. "She was a woman full of life."
According to the Sayreville Borough Council website, Dwumfour was serving a 2022-2024 term.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also released a statement, mourning the loss of the councilwoman.
"I am stunned by the news of Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour's murder last evening in an act of gun violence," Murphy said. "I send my condolences to her family and friends, and the entire Sayreville community."
