An 8-foot metal fence has been erected outside of the United States Supreme Court as abortion-related protests continue. Earlier this week, a draft opinion that would overturn the landmark Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling leaked, sparking protests outside the high court's building in Washington DC.
The leaked opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, is not the Court's final ruling on abortion rights in the US. The Court's decision is expected in late June, multiple outlets reported.
Abortion rights advocates and some anti-abortion protesters have gathered outside the high court several times this week in the wake of the leaked draft opinion. The fence, ABC News reported, was installed in front of the building overnight Wednesday (May 4).
Reports indicate the fencing is similar to the barriers put in place after the January 6, 2021, deadly Capitol riot. The protests in the Supreme Court plaza have largely been without physical violence, ABC News reported, leaving some to question the move about putting the fence in place.
Neither the Supreme Court nor Capitol Hill Police has spoken publicly about potential threats to the building or justices.
