Secrets of Airbnb Hosts

As Airbnb becomes more popular, there are a number of these you should know about being both a host and a guest. With that in mind, Mental Floss asked some experienced hosts about the things guests might want to know. Here are their 10 biggest secrets:

  1. Airbnb will send a photographer to host homes.Airbnb wants its listings to be successful, and offer perks to make that happen--including sending a professional photographer to their space for a free photoshoot, if hosts ask for one.
  2. Hosts known that cut pet photos can lead to bookings.Including photos of your pets is a great way to get attention.
  3. There’s a reason some hosts greet you in person.Plain and simple, it’s a friendlier way of doing business.
  4. Sometimes hosts get gifts.Hosts have received things such as a hand-crocheted tea cozy and freeze-dried salmon. Wine is also nice.
  5. Not every hosting experience is positive.Hosts are bound to collect a few horror stories after working with the service long enough.
  6. Hosts appreciate when you clean up.Hosts know that cleaning up after guests is part of the job, but that doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate it when people go out of their way to be neat.
  7. Hosts hate when you’re late.Updating your host if you know you’re going to be late is much better than not communicating with them at all.
  8. Hosts don’t want to give you a bad review.Airbnb hosts know how important reviews can be, and they aren’t quick to assign negative ratings to guests.
  9. It’s hard to make a living just from hosting. The money hosts make from Airbnb is a nice cushion, but it’s not enough to make a real living.
  10. Sometimes, hosts make lifelong friendships with guests. Some hosts have developed lasting friendships with former guests who are scattered around the globe.
